So I missed last night…I was having Chinese at the RSL at Country Town 2.0 with my boss and some teachers visiting from the capital city.
Anyhow tonight there is a power apron up for grabs…the winner has control over every single challenge next week…they’ll be making decisions about challenges with the three judges…mmmm sounds fun!!
We have 6 contenders…Emilia, Jamie, Renae, Brent, Amy and Tracy.
1st round is an entrée…the best three make a main course, then the best two make a dessert and the winner gets the power apron. They have to bring the dream dish.
For the entrée they have 30 minutes to cook.
Jamie wants to make a cured trout dish…no trout…poor bugger is confused. Now he’s got the same ingredients as Amy and they’re both doing a beetroot and goat’s cheese salad.
Renae’s having a mid-challenge crisis…but at the start. Then she has a crisis near the end with raw quail and has to hope the sauce cooks the breasts.
Emilia decides to use the mandoline without the guard on it and knows it could be a problem…gee funny about that…she takes off the top of her finger, but wants to keep cooking.
Time is up…Tracy made winter vegetable soup with lobster…George wants to put it in his thermos with a loaf of bread.
Renae made a warm quail salad with Moroccan flavours…the rosewater is not impressing the judges…it tastes like George’s grandmother’s perfume.
Emilia made zucchini salad and Matt asks if she will be able to cook in the other rounds. George thinks it is clever. Gary thinks there is too much oil.
Brent made charred prawns with corn and guacamole. Gary says it needs to be taken back to the drawing board and re-visited.
Jamie made beetroot and goat’s cheese salad and Gary says it looks beautiful…and Matt licks the plate…oh dear lord. It’s also beyond the wildest expectations of Gary.
Amy made beetroot and goat’s cheese with strawberries and balsamic and George says is isn’t an entrée it is a dessert.
Through to round 2 are Jamie, Emilia and Tracy.
Round 2 is main course, open pantry, open garden, 45 minutes.
Jamie is going on a beetroot theme and Emilia can’t feel her finger…which George says is a good thing…yeah sure.
Time is up…first is Tracy…smoked duck breast with mushrooms and charred leeks. George thought it would be over-smoked but he loves it. Matt thinks it is a benchmark dish.
Jamie made…lamb backstrap and freekah succotash. George says it is the best cooked lamb he has seen in a long time. But apparently the freekah is undercooked and the judges ask why it is on the plate.
Emilia made a Japanese inspired fillet steak…Gary says the meat is cooked perfectly, but he’s concerned about the weird nori almond cream.
Through to the dessert round are Tracy and Jamie and they have 1 hour to cook. However Jamie isn’t inspired at all whilst in the pantry.
Mid cook everyone thinks Jamie is in control, he’s tried to make ganache without breaking up chocolate…puts gelatine into a cold liquid, has grated beetroot on for a puree, but can’t remember what the puree for. Gary and George tell him to stop and think…he give up on beetroot and goes for berries instead. One minute to go and Jamie is re-plating as his beetroot meringue split so thankfully he leaves it out.
Time is up…first up is Jamie…soft chocolate mousse with chocolate crumb and berries…however the judges don’t comment until they taste Tracy’s dish…”cookies and cream.” Matt asks if there are any of the 5 elements that don’t contain sugar and she says no.
Decision time…Matt says well Jamie got something up, but the mousse was sloppy and the crumb was chewy. As for Tracy he said they had to ask about the sugar and thankfully she was able to balance the amount of sugar and it was amazing cooking and it took more control than they’ve shown in a long time to go back for more.
Tracy has won the power apron…Sunday night Tracy gets to deliver food boxes to each contestant…mmm interesting!!
