Grease the musical

Grease is the word…at least it is in Melbourne at the moment.

Last Friday was my mum’s birthday, and as her Christmas present I bought tickets for her, my sister and me to go and see the new Grease musical.

Things started off rather interestingly when we saw some older people dressed up as cheer leaders, T-Birds and even dressed up as Sandy in very, very tight black pants.  I’ve taken on the phrase “leggings are not pants this year” and these ladies that were in their late 60’s need to heed this advice.  Stranger still was that there were people getting photos with them as they legitimately thought they were in the cast…oh my goodness gracious all I could do was roll my eyes.

Anyway onto the show…

You have to love a show where the biggest applause is for people that are only on stage for a few minutes…cue Bert Newton, Anthony Callea and Todd McKenny.

Oh Bert Newton…how any person cannot love Bert is beyond me…Bert plays Vince Fontaine and obviously the hairpiece has found the hairspray for the show!!!  But how I love Bert.

Then there’s Todd McKenney…yes the same Todd that’s on Dancing with the Stars…and given that he’s on stage for a whole 3-4 minutes he makes the most of it…as does the audience.  Complete with a bit of a cross to ‘The Boy from Oz’ where he was Peter Allen  Todd plays Teen Angel so he has his glorious female angels around him while Frenchy’s having her moment about beauty school.

Anthony Callea also pops on stage for a whole 3-4 minutes as Johnny Casino singing Hand Jive.  Anthony was the runner up on Australian Idol in 2004, yet I honestly couldn’t tell you who the winner was and he’s been around since then.  But you have to love Anthony Callea…at least I do and have probably since he was on Australian Idol.

The main two characters of course in Grease are Danny and Sandy.  In this Danny is played by Rob Mills (also a former Australian Idol contestant, from season 1 in 2003).  I have to say I haven’t been the biggest fan of his, but I think that changed after seeing him in this…I quite enjoyed him as Danny.

Sandy was played by Gretel Scarlett, who’s previously been in Mamma Mia! and Wicked the Musical.  Now I know I said that leggings are not pants, but honestly she’s about the only person who might get away with it…oh my God…she looks amazing as Sandy at the end in the black outfit.

Anyway she show was great…then again I’ve always loved the movie Grease so maybe I am slightly biased as I enjoy the movie.  But the three of us had a great night.
