Daily Prompt: We can be taught!

Today’s daily prompt is about what makes a teacher great…I’m sure at times the cherubs think I’m great and they love me and at times they think I’m completely mad, completely unreasonable and that they hate me.

Actually come to think about it I can be told “I hate you” numerous times a day and told “I love you” just as many times a day.

A great teacher is one that knows that they shouldn’t take things personally.

Yes the cherubs may yell and scream at you, but more often than not it is not aimed directly at you, but it is aimed at you because you won’t fight back like so many others in their lives would.  Cherubs come in to the classroom with many things going on in their lives and the classroom is meant to be their safe place.  The place where they can be safe and happy.

A great teacher is one who listens.

All teachers talk, it is the job of us teachers to talk, to impart our knowledge onto the cherubs in our care.  But a great teacher is one who also takes a lot of time to listen.  Listens to the general conversation of the cherubs, knows about their lives outside of the time in your care, knows about their family, what they like and don’t like, knows what is happening in their lives.

A great teacher is one who knows when it is time to change your plans and go with the flow.

Just because we plan what we are going to teach for the year, the semester, the term, the week and the day it doesn’t mean that it will all eventuate.  There are times when you just need to drop the plan, change direction and go with the flow.  Sometimes dropping everything and changing plans is a lot more important than continuing on with what is going on and what you wanted to teach.

A great teacher is one who continues to learn.

Just because you’re a teacher doesn’t mean that you should stop learning.  Curriculum is constantly evolving, Australia is bring in the Australian Curriculum, which involves changes to what you need to teach and when, so teachers need to learn about the new curriculum documents.  Programs and what is popular changes.  Schools change.  Teachers move to different schools, if you’re me that can be in different states or different countries.  Teachers change the year level that they teach, I’ve taught cherubs aged between three and 18, actually I’ve had them all at the same time in the same room at one place, but that’s a whole different story.
