Cookbooks… Luke Mangan – Salt Grill…and Aus/overseas food names

My latest cookbook purchase arrived yesterday.

A signed copy of Luke Mangan’s Salt Grill cookbook bought from Peter’s of Kensington

Yet something astounded me when I was reading it.  Ingredients were listed and then in brackets was an overseas name of the ingredient.  Here’s what came up in the recipes.

capsicums – peppers

caster sugar – superfine sugar

sultanas – golden raisin

flat leaf parsley – Italian parsley

prawn – shrimp

coriander – cilantro

plain flour – all-purpose flour

beetroot – beets

nori – dried seaweed

cornflour – cornstarch

mixed spice – pumpkin pie spice

bicarbonate of soda – baking soda

thin cream – pouring cream

rocket – arugula

zucchini – courgettes

thick cream – double cream

minced veal – ground veal

minced pork – ground pork

butternut pumpkin – squash

pumpkin – winter squash

kipling potatoes – fingerling potatoes

icing sugar – confectioner’s sugar

Just a few different food names…and there were actually more than that!
